Evangelism at a voodoo temple near our house

What a night! Last night was a normal night for Andrea and myself. We were very happy to see a local church was having a street service/crusade near our home. This is what we had been praying for: the local church to actively share the gospel in this community. We went to bed around 10:30 since it had already been dark about 5 hours. Shortly after retiring, I was awakened by the loud sound of the local voodoo temple having a service. It was much louder than normal, and there were many more people participating. So I decided to stay up and pray for a while. A few minutes later, another area began a new voodoo ceremony, and before long, there were three locations within a five minute walk of our house worshipping Satan and the spirits of voodoo. I was listening  to chants, drums, and shouts coming from the voodoo service closest to our house when suddenly, a woman began to violently scream for several minutes. She had just received her voodoo spirit, and that was the manifestation of it!

As you know, today is Halloween in the States. We are very happy to hear stories of the churches back in Tennessee offering children a safe and Godly alternative to the traditions of Halloween. However, Halloween in Haiti is quite different than our candy celebration in the States. In our American culture, it “appears” very harmless; in Haitian culture, it is all but harmless. The animals that were sacrificed last night to the demons are a testimony to the evil that is present in this celebration. It is known as All Saints Day or The Day of The Dead.

This celebration officially begins November 1 in Haiti. Last night was just a warm up to what will happen for the next several days. It is a minimum of a two-day celebration here in Haiti. Even many of the schools have a 3-day celebration with no actual classes, just parties to celebrate Satan.

While Haiti is celebrating the dead all around the country Sunday night, we will be in the heart of it showing the Jesus film. They may choose to celebrate the dead, but we choose to proclaim the resurrection of Jesus, who is no longer dead but alive and seated at the right hand of the Father.

We ask you to keep us in prayer over the next few days while all of this is taking place. Also, help us pray that God will give us wisdom of how to reach the people who we are sent to.

Celebrating The Resurrection,

Mike & Andrea Brewer
