The Thackers move to America
ReachHaiti wants to thank Joseph and McCall Thacker for their service these past 15 months on the ground in Haiti. They have been a blessing to our team and will be greatly missed. We are excited for them and their new journey back to life in States and want to bless them in all they do. Their passion for the Lord will be used to continue to glorify God wherever He leads them.
Written by Joseph and McCall Thacker:
Choosing to go back to America was not an easy decision. The past 15 months in Haiti, while difficult, have been amazing. It’s cool to see the ways that God has connected us with people, taught us lessons, and strengthened us in ways we could have never imagined. We have a family here that is dear to our hearts. All of the Haitians we’ve grown close to, along with other missionaries, will forever be part of us, and friendships that will last for a lifetime.
Choosing to move to Haiti and join the Reach Haiti team is one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. It provided us with a community here that we could lean on, and a team of people to celebrate all the wonderful ways God moves in this country.
We’ve experienced so much growth during this season of our lives, growth that wouldn’t have happened if we never followed God’s calling. Our marriage is stronger than ever before. We’ve experienced amazing things together and witnessed some pretty tough things too. We had to truly lean on one another during those times, and look to God to guide us when we dealt with the difficulties of Haiti.
God used this time to grow each of us spiritually. I’ve loved that part about living here. Haiti is a harsh place sometimes, and there aren’t many great resources for personal growth. You really find out a lot about your relationship with God when it’s just you and Him. We haven’t really had a good church to rely on, or great worship sessions. All of that was stripped away when we got on the plane. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I think it’s a wonderful thing. Don’t get me wrong, having a strong community surrounding you is so important. It’s necessary to our walk with Christ. But I think that God gives us seasons where He takes that away and it forces us to examine our place with Him. How are we when it really is just you and God? For us, that was a positive thing. We are more in love with Jesus than ever before, and we’re on fire for what He has planned. We want everyone to understand the greatness of His love, and we want to make that possible in whatever way.
I could go on for days with stories of how we witnessed God moving and changing lives. This country desperately needs Jesus; they desperately need the truth of who He is and what His love looks like. We are honored that God chose us to be a small part of that. By no means is this a goodbye to Haiti. Haiti will always be a home to us, and a huge part of our hearts.
We’re excited to see how God continues to use Reach Haiti to reach the lost. We’re pumped for the medical facility that’s being built, and we have a great team on the ground providing people with treatment they would otherwise not have. We plan to help Reach Haiti in whatever ways we can. Join us in praying for that process; pray that God would not only physically heal his children, but that their hearts would be healed as well.
Even though we’re really sad to leave Haiti, we’re excited about the ministry we’ll be able to do in the states. We’ve learned a lot about the lives of missionaries, and we want to serve them in whatever way we can. We want to be a source of encouragement and advice for them, we want to help them financially, and use our resources to provide for them in different ways.
We desire to live mission-filled lives, and we’re excited to bring part of our Haiti lifestyle to America in order to reach a new community of people. What are we doing if our minds aren’t focused on spreading the incredible love of Jesus and showing people how glorious the kingdom of Heaven is? We can’t wait to have a more radical mindset in the states and serve people there.
We plan to visit Reach Haiti as much as we can. We love these people so much, and we still want to be there for them. We believe in what God is doing in Haiti, and it really is worth celebrating. We’re praying for change, and we’re praying for the kingdom of God to grow rapidly!
